Olivia Lueking, a sophomore at Oklahoma and a three-time Big 12 Conference women's pole vault as well as an indoor All-American for the Sooners, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss returning to Texas to compete June 8 at the NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Lueking, who attended Clear Creek High in League City, Texas, competed at the venue at the UIL State Championships as a prep athlete, in addition to vaulting at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays representing Oklahoma. She explains how meaningful it is for family to be able to watch her compete in person at the Division 1 final and how excited Lueking is to be competing under the lights during the evening schedule. Lueking reflects on her sudden-death tiebreaker at the NCAA Division 1 West Regional in Sacramento and earning the 12th and final berth to qualify for nationals in a four-vaulter jump-off. She shares how significant her faith was in providing strength during that competition and throughout her career, and Lueking examines how her morning devotional May 25 provided the reassurance that she was up for any challenge at the event. Lueking revisits clearing a lifetime-best 14-9 (4.50m) on April 29 at Texas Tech, elevating her among the top 25 all-time outdoor collegiate competitors, and the need to secure bigger poles for future competitions following her attempts at 15-1 (4.60m). She also reflects on winning the Big 12 title May 13 with a 13-11.25 (4.25m) clearance at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex in Norman. Lueking examines the collaboration and communication she has built with Oklahoma assistant coach Jerel Langley and how beneficial his insight and experience have been in her progress. She speaks about finding her identity outside of competition, and how important her spiritual journey has been in recent years, especially after competing in gymnastics for a decade. Lueking analyzes how valuable the lessons learned from previous NCAA Championships have been in her development, including a runner-up performance March 10 with a 14-7.25 (4.45m) clearance at the indoor final in Albuquerque, N.M., and how proud she would be to become the first Oklahoma female athlete to capture a Division 1 pole vault title in program history.
